A Bias-free Writing!
A Bias-free communication is a language that involves all people without denoting their gender identities, ethics, ages, sexual orientation, ability, and affiliations.
Bias-free communication demands that the writer be sensitive in choosing words for communication to avoid even a single sense of offense to any person. Such a sense of choosing bias-free words in communication makes the conversation friendly and meaningful to the receivers without discrimination.
We know when we are giving a speech and using gestures and our facial expressions to indicate that we don’t mean any offence. But it is not as easy on paper.
To free our writing of this bias, one has to employ clear and objective language without generalizing using any gender, age, racial group, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation.
Sample: Salesmen do a great job.
In the above sentence, the word “salesmen” is a biased word because, with men, women can be on the sales team. Hence, we can select a better word that will be free of sexual orientation. For this sentence, we can use the term “salespersons” to avoid sexual orientation and make the conversation bias-free.
